Eradicating carpet poverty in Calderdale.

Through 2024, we were becoming aware that, at the end of a tenancy, a housing association would remove all carpets from a property before re-tenanting and the new tenant was responsible for carpeting their new home.

Carpets Like A Boss!!!! started when it was clear that a significant number of social tenants could not afford to carpet the houses they were given by the various housing associations. In extreme cases, tenants and their children were being injured by old, splinter-ridden floor boards and generally did not feel their house was a home without carpet, it was effecting their mental and physical health.

Enter Mercado Carpets.

Mercado, the UK's largest carpet wholesaler, provide us (completely free of charge) with carpets, underlay, vinyl floor coverings and all the accessories required to fit anything from one carpet to a whole house. The carpets supplied to us are excess stock, end of line carpets which would otherwise end up in landfill.

Over the last 24 months, demand from social housing tenants has been high; we've taken over 800 referrals and fitted floor coverings into over 630 local homes, ranging from a simple bedroom carpet to whole houses. We've had terrific support from local businesses, housing associations, the Community Foundation for Calderdale, Calderdale Council and ACTS435.

By supplying and fitting free carpets to Calderdale's more vulnerable residents, we bring about the following positive changes:

• Safer homes for children (no more splinters!).
• Warmer homes: carpet & underlay has great insulation value.
• Damp free homes.
• Homes are better for asthma sufferers because carpets trap dust/pollen.
• Sound insulation (carpeted houses are less noisy).
